THE ANCESTRAL STORY LIBERATION PROJECT
James Mars is widely remembered as the last enslaved man in Connecticut and one of the few who left behind his own written narrative. As Rev. Dr. Shelley Best’s great-great-great-great-grandfather, his voice is not only a historical record — it is a spiritual inheritance. His self-authored freedom story inspires the Ancestral Story Liberation Project, which continues the work he began by reclaiming the voices history attempted to silence.
Many firsthand narratives of enslaved people exist in the public domain, yet remain unread, unstudied, and inaccessible to most people today. This project brings new life to these stories by recovering original texts, reviving them through careful research and artistic interpretation, and transforming them into beautifully designed eBooks, audiobooks, performances, talks, and digital archives for a new generation.
Through narrative restoration, oral history, community remembrance, and creative reinterpretation, we return dignity, humanity, and visibility to those whose lives shaped this nation. This work is more than historical recovery — it is spiritual repair, cultural remembrance, and an invitation to reclaim truths that still have the power to heal us now.

CREATIVE DISRUPTION
A modern movement where artists, activists, philanthropists, and policymakers reshape what is possible.
Creative Disruption is TubmanWalker’s signature philosophy — a way of leading, imagining, and building that treats creativity as a force for personal renewal and collective transformation. It speaks to three core audiences shaping the future: artists and activists, philanthropists and funders, and policymakers working at the intersection of community, culture, and justice. The movement grows through three essential pathways: training, exploration, and public activation.
Training, Development & Leadership Pathways
For artists, activists, philanthropists, and policymakers
The heart of Creative Disruption begins in The Grove, where individuals from across disciplines gather to learn, reflect, and strengthen their capacity for imaginative leadership. Through classes, conversations, and curated gatherings, members explore the foundations of Creative Disruption: clarity, belonging, bold imagination, resilience, and cultural reach. These trainings support emerging leaders, community organizers, funders, and culture-makers in developing the spiritual intelligence, creative thinking, and emotional grounding needed to become transformative disruptors in their own fields.
Participants gain tools for narrative change, community rooted leadership, social imagination, and the kind of personal resilience that allows creative change to take root.
Exploring Creative Disruption: Speaking, Education & Curated Events
Creative Disruption comes alive through public dialogue — keynote talks, workshop series, salons, creative conversations, and culturally curated gatherings. These experiences introduce communities, institutions, and audiences to the philosophy, offering frameworks for reimagining leadership, culture, philanthropy, and public life.
Through speaking engagements, symposiums, book-centered conversations, and specially curated events, Rev. Dr. Shelley D. Best guides participants into deeper inquiry:
* What does it mean to lead with imagination?
* How do communities rise after disruption?
* What does healing-centered creativity look like in practice?
* How can philanthropy and policy support cultural resilience, not just programs?
These explorations help cities, universities, artists, funders, and civic leaders understand how Creative Disruption can transform culture from the inside out.
Public Creative Disruptions: Large-Scale Art, Community Campaigns & Global Asset Mapping
Creative Disruption also manifests through public campaigns — large-scale, community-driven art projects that bring together residents, stakeholders, and interdisciplinary partners for collective transformation. These projects use creative asset mapping, storytelling, and healing arts to reveal a community’s strengths, dreams, and cultural DNA.
Whether it is a major public art installation, a cultural activation in a disinvested neighborhood, a multi-city campaign, or a global project rooted in heritage and belonging, Creative Disruption brings together artists, funders, activists, and policymakers to co-create powerful statements of public imagination. These initiatives not only beautify space — they repair narrative, spark civic pride, and build ecosystems where people and ideas can thrive.
This is Creative Disruption at scale: public creativity used as a tool for healing, belonging, and transformative change.
